Long, long ago, in a small fishing village, there lived a kind-hearted young man named Urashima Tarō. One day, as he walked along the shore, he came upon a group of children who had caught a large turtle. Drawing closer, he saw that the children were tormenting the poor creature — and the turtle, tears streaming down its face, gazed up at him with pleading eyes.
Two or three days later, while Tarō was out fishing, he heard a voice calling softly: "Urashima… Urashima…" It was the turtle he had saved. The turtle carried him on its back and dove deep into the sea. Around them the water glowed a brilliant blue; great curtains of kelp swayed in the current, and forests of red and pink coral stretched as far as the eye could see.
As Tarō gazed about in wonder, they arrived before a magnificent palace. Led inside by the turtle, he was greeted by the beautiful Princess Otohime, mistress of the Dragon Palace, surrounded by a retinue of colorful fish. He was escorted to a great hall, where feast after splendid feast was brought to him, and to the strains of gentle music, sea bream, flounder, and jellyfish performed the most breathtaking dances he had ever seen.
Lost in the pleasures of the Dragon Palace, three years slipped by without Tarō noticing. Then one day a sudden thought struck him — what had become of his family and friends back home? He went at once to the Princess.
Bidding farewell to the Princess, Tarō rode the turtle back to the surface world. But when he arrived, he looked around in bewilderment. This was surely the shore where he had fished — yet everything felt wrong. His home was nowhere to be found, and every face he passed was a stranger's. He stopped an old man and asked.
And so, despite the warning, Tarō opened the Jeweled Box. Billow upon billow of white smoke poured forth. In the mist, visions appeared — the Dragon Palace, the beautiful Princess Otohime, all the happy memories of his three years beneath the sea, one after another. Tarō smiled… but the smoke slowly thinned and faded. And there in its place stood not a young man, but a frail, trembling old man, his hair and beard as white as snow.
